Surrendering Your Golden

If you have a golden who needs a new home:

Homeward Bound rescues golden retrievers from shelters all over California and beyond, and from owners who can no longer keep them. If you need to find a new home for your golden, please contact the Area Coordinator closest to you.  Area Coordinators are listed below.  We will contact you as quickly as possible.

When you surrender your golden to Homeward Bound, you relinquish ownership and all rights to the dog. We require that you sign a surrender contract, and that you disclose any medical problems and/or behavior problems that your golden has had.

All dogs who come to us are examined by a veterinarian, are tested for heartworm, are spayed/neutered if they are intact, and are brought current on their vaccinations.  We treat any identified medical condition.  Because we exist on donations, we ask that you make a surrender donation to help cover these costs.  We will not refuse your dog if you are unable to make a donation.

The more information you can give us about your golden, the better a job we can do in placing him/her in an appropriate new home.  We will ask you to write a few paragraphs about your golden, so that we can help the new family to make him/her feel secure and welcome.

Your dog will be evaluated, and when we deem the dog ready for adoption, he or she will be made available for adoption.  We do our best to match up our dogs with the perfect applicant, based on the temperament, characteristics, and behavior of the dog.

If you see a golden advertised in the newspaper, in a shelter or on an internet list, please contact the appropriate Area Coordinator or call us at 916-655-1410. If the dog is in a shelter, please give us the dog's impound number if possible, and let us know which shelter it is in.  We prefer that you do not contact the shelter yourself, because the shelter may get numerous calls about the same dog.  We work with specific individuals at many shelters, and they often call us when they have goldens who need us.

If you know someone who needs to surrender their golden:
Please refer them to our website and ask them to contact their Area Coordinator or call us at 916-655-1410. We will call them back as soon as possible.
