Heartworm Hotel

Meet Our Current and Some Of Our Past Heartworm Hotel Residents

Heartworm Hotel can be at many different places, the common bond is that they’re all at the end of a lonely street. Homeless dogs finding themselves with heartworms have very few options. Most shelters can’t afford the cost ($500-$700) or the time involved (8-12 weeks) to treat them. These dogs are not adoptable and the condition is almost always painfully fatal.

We will be featuring our “Heartworm Hotel” residents and telling their stories while they go through their heartworm treatment. The Heartworm Hotel may be on Lonely Street, but it’s not the end of the road for these residents! We invite you to share in their journeys.

Homeward Bound works hard to enlist the aid of benevolent donors to help with treatment costs and is committed to saving these otherwise disposed of dogs. If you would like to help out with a donation for our Heartworm Hotel residents, please see links below on how to donate, or purchase a Heartworm Hotel t-shirt.

Heartworm treatment starts with chest x-rays and blood work to determine the severity of the infestation and the feasibility of treatment. The typical treatment consists of two injections of “Immiticide” in the muscle along the back...these injections are to kill the adult heartworms. It is painful and the dog is usually very nauseous and miserable. The dog must be kept very quiet. They must not be allowed to run or get excited. An increase in heart rate could cause a migration of the dying heartworms to the lungs and causing clots of worms. They must be carefully watched, signs of concern include; coughing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding and not wanting to eat. Also of concern would be tenderness or swelling around the injection site. Four weeks later the dog will receive an oral medication to kill the baby heartworms found in the blood...they need to stay at the Vets and be closely watched for any adverse reaction to the medication. Just think, all of this could have been prevented with a once a month heartworm preventative pill. After two weeks, the dog is tested and if heartworm free, they are able to check-out (placed on Available list) and go home (get adopted). This is a painful, stressful ordeal, not only for the dog but also for the caregivers who watch helplessly as their foster dog travels this journey.

Even though Heartworm Hotel is always crowded - with your help, we will find a room for these Goldens who have no other accommodations. Won’t you consider sharing the journey and “sponsoring” one of these Hotel residents?
