May 2003 - Completion of Phase I at the Sanctuary Draws Near
Duke and Chelsea in the brand new Sanctuary dorm roomExcitement builds as we draw nearer to the opening of the new kennel facility at the Sanctuary. We have made tremendous progress over the last 30 days and are so very grateful to those volunteers who have assisted in each phase of the construction process. It has been hard work, but the Goldens will be most appreciative.

The kennel building is nearly finished. The exterior siding is installed and freshly painted. We have also installed two 8-foot patio sliders and a metal entry door. The interior walls were sheet-rocked, painted and textured, and fiberglass-reinforced panels were installed to protect the walls from water damage. We are also working on completion of the siding in the public area of the building. That would include the office, visitor’s lounge area and grooming area. The heating and air conditioning vents are in and a brand new 5-Ton Bryant heating/air conditioning unit is waiting to be installed. Once the HVAC system is installed, we will contact Sutter County officials for a final inspection. If we pass, the dogs will be able to move into their new accommodations.

Another major ongoing project is fencing. As finances permit, we are installing 6-foot high “no-climb” wire fencing to discourage any would-be canine escape artists. We recently completed fencing a 40 feet x 75 feet exercise yard directly behind the kennel building. In doing so, we had to learn the fine art of stretching fence wire. It is not as easy as it might seem. We should be more proficient when we begin fencing the 1+ acre exercise area on the north side of the Sanctuary property, which will be known as Golden Park. The posts are all in; we just don’t have the fence wire yet. The ultimate goal is to have the entire 8 acres fenced.

We will be planting numerous trees, installing security gates and digging out a large pond for summer swimming (canines only). Once the dog park is completely fenced, it will not only serve as an exercise area for the resident Goldens, but also as a meeting place, where prospective adoptive individuals/families can meet the dogs available for adoption and allow them to interact with their own dog(s). We are hoping to find donated picnic tables for the dog park.

As we continue to develop the Sanctuary property (planting grass, trees, shrubs, etc.), grounds keeping becomes a major task. We are seeking volunteers who can come out during the week to mow the lawn areas, and water the plants and perform other grounds maintenance functions. The good news is that it’s a riding mower. It even has a cup holder.

We hope that everyone can come out for a visit to see the Sanctuary firsthand. Saturdays and selected Sundays have been set aside for visiting guests. Please call first, as our agreement with Sutter County limits the number of visitors we can have at any one time.
