June 2004 - Dear Forever Mom and Dad
Dear Forever Mom and Dad:

We haven’t met yet, but I know you’re out there waiting for me. I know you’ll love me and care for me, brush me and cuddle me, and tell me I’m your special boy. But until we meet, I’m having a blast hanging out here at the Homeward Bound Adoption Center & Sanctuary. I want to tell you all about it, but first I’ll tell you how I came to be here.

My old family couldn’t keep me any more, so they took me to the local animal shelter. I was scared and sad and felt so alone. Then a Homeward Bound volunteer named Cheryl found me and got me out of the shelter. Lea arranged for me to be transported to safety by some Golden Taxi volunteers. First Bob, then Joyce drove me to the Homeward Bound Adoption Center & Sanctuary. Even though I was so happy to be out of the shelter, I was a little scared at first. But everyone here was so kind to me. Soon I figured out that everyone here loves us 4-leggers and I felt much better.

Getting a bushing from LindaDid you know they have a special doggie bath tub and grooming area here? Maureen and Carol gave me a warm bubble bath and cleaned my ears. It felt so good to be clean! Linda brushed me and trimmed my toenails and my tangled fur. What a relief that was! Things were really looking up, and I was back to my handsome old self. Barbara put a pretty new collar on me, one that she made herself! She then gave me a clean, soft quilt that she made especially for me! And while all of this was going on, Carla was writing a story about the kind of home I’m looking for, and Janet put it on the website so that you could find me. Lynn was looking on the applicant list, trying to find your name and phone number so that she could tell you all about me and that I was waiting here for you.

Kennels at HB Sanctuary I live in an air conditioned doggy dorm, with a comfy cot and lots of doggy friends. There's music playing and toys to keep me busy. Every morning Jody and Mike, who are the head counselors here at camp, feed us and take us out to go potty and play fetch. They talk to us, pet us and give us hugs and scratches. I get so happy when Jody tells me I’m her best boy. Between you and me, I think she has LOTS of best boys, but it feels so good to be spoken to so softly and with so much love. They keep our dog runs clean. We get great food and plenty of treats. In fact, listen to this, Mom and Dad - there’s a little bucket of treats hanging on the front of my dog run, so that anyone who comes by can give me one. This is not a bad deal!

Golden at Play signIn the evenings Jody and Mike or Barbara serve us a nice dinner. Then we get to go out to play again! This is my favorite time of all. They play with us, talk to us, cuddle us, and tell us how special we are, and that before long, we’ll have our very own forever homes. They make us all feel safe and loved. Mike plays ball with us, and that’s my favorite! He talks to me and tells me I’m a handsome young man. When we meet I hope YOU think I’m handsome, too, Mom and Dad. Jody goes for a long walk every evening, and she always takes one of us along. We all love going with Jody on her walks. There’s lots of interesting things to sniff. We see birds and jackrabbits and other little critters as we walk along in the cool fresh air.

Believe it or not, some of the dogs here have never had anyone love them and teach them things, so Mike, Jody, and Barbara, and other volunteers, help them begin learning house manners and important things like sit and stay. Of course, I already knew that stuff, so I help the others out by showing them how nicely I sit and lie down and shake hands.

Goldens playing in one of the Sanctuary yards We get to do lots of fun things here! There are always plenty of doggie buddies to hang out with, so we never get lonely. We have big grassy yards where we can run and sniff and roll around in the grass or lie in the shade of a tree. When it’s hot, we get to cool off in the wading pools. Oh boy, that’s the most fun! Our Golden Buddies like Jan, Teresa, Vicki and Desta come out to play with us and give us extra hugs and cuddles. We love when the Golden Buddies come to play. Scott comes out to spend time with us too. He helps the ones who are very scared, or who need some extra help learning their manners. Last week some school kids came out on a field trip, to visit with us and learn about rescue. It was such fun meeting new friends.

Taz and his friend Richard Every week Joanne, Richard and Jim come to mow all the lawns at the Adoption Center (and there are LOTS of lawns here). They play with us and talk to us and let some of us come out to help! And Mom and Dad, you’ve never seen so many tennis balls in your whole life! It’s enough to make a golden retriever weak in the knees!

Some of the dogs who come here stay for a few days, then go to something called a foster home. I don’t know who these people named Foster are, or why there are so many of them, but it sure seems like everyone around here loves the Fosters. From what I understand, if Homeward Bound gets more people named Foster, they can save more dogs like me. I’ll figure that all out and get back to you.

Safe and loved at the HB Sanctuary So that’s it for now, Mom and Dad. I know we’ll meet soon. It will be love at first sight. You’ll take me home and rub my ears and tell me I’m your forever boy and I’ll never be homeless and scared again. But until then, I’m having lots of fun here at Homeward Bound. I’m safe and loved and warm and clean. I have lots of human and doggie friends to play with. Yep, this is a pretty doggone good place to hang out while I wait for you to come along.

Love and slurpy kisses,
Your future Homeward Bound Golden
