Fresh Perspective On Making Your Dog Healthy
by Hope Lewis Williams, Homeward Bound Volunteer
Rescued or puppy-raised, your dog is an integral member of your Family and keeping him healthy is critically important to both of you. Whether he is or isn’t healthy focuses on your perspective of what health really means for him.

Your best friend seems just fine. His coat looks good. His energy is always ready for a walk, game of ball or a car ride. His appetite is OK. He eats all his dry kibble and always wants treats. He doesn’t appear to have any problems, unless you count a constant need for attention and kisses. In fact, your vet said he was in good shape six months ago when his usual annual exam and vaccines were done. Of course your buddy’s healthy! What would make you think otherwise?

Chances are you’ve heard a few stories in the last year about healthy, relatively young dogs becoming ill and dying shortly thereafter. Frequently the cause of this "sudden" illness is cancer, the top killer of dogs today. No doubt you’ve heard about frustrated owners, at the end of their patience and budgets, resorting to steroids to find resolution to their dogs’ allergic suffering. Or others who sympathetically put their dogs on other toxic drugs to treat the painful symptoms of arthritis in their "aging" dog of only seven! Cancer, allergies and arthritis, rare illnesses in dogs 25 years ago, now account for the large majority of vet visits, contributing majorly to the premature deaths of our beloved pets. As with humans, these illnesses don’t occur suddenly, only the symptoms seem to pop up one day.

So what’s a dog and his human to do to increase the odds in favor of long term health? Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do! The path to achieving and maintaining health in your dog springs from three foundations--fresh perspective, new knowledge and implementation of change.

The "old" approach to canine health is to treat obvious symptoms of ill health. The new PERSPECTIVE is "maintaining wellness" using quality nutrition, enhanced digestive process and strengthened immune systems. Young, mature or senior, currently ill or presently robust, the odds favor recovery and longer, healthier life using new perspective to care for your dog holistically.

KNOWLEDGE is the second key. Did you know that canine old age really isn’t a disease? Or that the underlying causes of most canine illness today fall into the areas of poor quality, by-product based nutrition, over vaccination and accumulated effects of toxic drugs? Did you know that reliable research and information is abundantly available to help us change the way we care for our dogs? Changes that can tip the odds dramatically in favor of longer, healthier life for our best friends. Try on this new perspective of prevention and wellness by clicking on barnes&noble.com and reading "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin Goldstein, or "Keep Your Dog Healthy the Natural Way" by Pat Lazarus, as soon as they arrive at your front door.

Then start IMPLEMENTING CHANGE! Find a premium, whole food, kibble without by- products, soy, corn, wheat or beef and that lists top quality protein in the first three ingredients. Typically running a dollar a pound, it’s cheap compared to a $100 vet visit. Learn about nutritional enzymes and supplements to build your dog’s internal health. Consider alternatives to conventional drugs and treatments. Implement holistic changes to nourish your dog’s wellness and watch him thrive.

Your dog depends on you for everything. As the leader of his pack, put your new perspective and knowledge to work for both of you to assure optimal wellness and long life with your best friend by your side!
