Kibble & Bids™ 2003 - Dog Days of Summer
K&B GuestsJuly 26, 2003 marked Homeward Bound's Third Annual Kibble & Bids fundraiser, a day that was record-breaking in a number of ways. First, we broke attendance records with approximately 450 people participating. Second, we raised over $62,000, netting some $10,000 more than in 2002 with $45,000 in net proceeds. And, third, we broke historical temperature records with a whopping 102 degrees with no delta breeze! I guess you could say the only thing that didn't cooperate was the weather!

K&B Winery Kibble & Bids opened at 4:00 p.m. on what we thought was going to be a typical July day - mid-nineties, slight breeze. Unfortunately not! Thank goodness we had plenty of bottled water and soft drinks on ice - and numerous wineries and breweries set up for some major tasting. Blackstone Winery, Boeger Winery, Chatom Vineyards, Ironstone Vineyards, Lava Cap Winery, Mutt Lynch Winery, Nine Gables Vineyards, Perry Creek Winery, Peirano Estates Vineyards, Renwood Winery, Stevenot Winery, Napa Ridge Winery, RH Phillips, Jewel Collection Wines, and Sullivan Vineyards all participated this year. We also had great beers and ready-to-drink beverages on hand: Hoegaarden, Pyramid Ale, Stella Artois, Smirnoff Ice, Mike's Hard Lemonade and Mike's Cranberry Lemonade.

While this tasting was occurring, our silent auction and raffle were going strong! We had terrific silent auction items up for bid this year ranging from jewelry, artwork, sports items, pottery, gift certificates, weekend get-aways, wine and food, and a huge array of pet-related items. We owe a debt of thanks to our hundreds of donors. This year's "Golden Shopping Mall" raffle was fabulous, too! Five different dog-themed packages were offered, including couture fashions, epicurean food, nutrition, and grooming for some very lucky dogs (and owners!). Our thanks go to Hope Williams for taking the lead on our raffle amidst moving her business and household lock, stock, and barrel to Sequim, Washington.

Sanctuary pictorial presentation New this year was a pictorial presentation of the progress we've been making at Homeward Bound's adoption center and sanctuary. Volunteers Bob Murphy and Carolyn Belz chose, developed, and posted an array of large photographs which visually described what's been happening at the sanctuary - cleaning, construction, planting, fencing, and the weekend routine of washing dogs and making matches with adoptive families.

Our buffet featured a number of top Sacramento restaurants and caterers, including Bandera Restaurant (serving their incredible ribs), Mikuni Japanese Restaurant (sushi, sushi, and more sushi), Enotria Café & Wine Bar, Virga's, Bella Bru Café & Catering, Chipotle Mexican Grill, All Seasons All Reasons Fine Catering, Spoons Market Café & Bakery. Thanksgiving Coffee Company, from Ft. Bragg, provided fresh-brewed, organic coffee. Believe it or not despite the heat, the large vats of coffee were almost empty by night's end!

The large tent, with tables adorned in colors of red and gold, was the site of our live auction. In addition to the twenty or so "Golden Greeters" on hand to say hello to Kibble & Bids' patrons, each table featured a beautiful floral arrangement with a photograph and story of one of Homeward Bound's rescued Goldens. For the second year in a row, Heather Murdock of The Blue Orchid (a Homeward Bound adopter with her husband Sean Smith), has created a stunning setting under the tent. Thanks, Heather!

Our live auction was ushered in by a parade of our "Golden Greeters". What a sight! Of course, most were dressed for the occasion and pranced to the stage knowing how special they were. Jody Jones introduced them all, and recounted several touching stories of some of the more notable rescues Homeward Bound has been involved. Then, we launched directly into our live auction with the great help of Marianne McClary, co-anchor of KMAX (UPN 31) "Good Day, Sacramento", and our incredible auctioneer, Joe Gates. What a team! We auctioned off some 40 items in record-breaking time-noted Sacramento artists Gregory Kondos' and Fred Dalkey artwork, timeshare weeks in Puerto Vallarta, Palm Springs, Vail Colorado, and Sedona, Arizona, upscale weekend excursions, fine jewelry, handmade quilts, a barbecue for 100 people, helicopter rides, and, thanks to Geoff & Anne-Marie Petrie, incredible Sacramento Kings and Monarchs sports items.

Before we knew it, 8:00 p.m. had arrived and Kibble & Bids was over for yet another year. How had four hours evaporated so quickly after ten or so months of planning!?! So, in a nutshell, despite the heat, Kibble & Bids was a great success for Homeward Bound and we have our sponsors, donors, hearty attendees, committee chairs and co-chairs, and volunteers to thank. We would be absolutely remiss not including Doug Alcorn and John White in our thanks, who graciously open their home and beautiful grounds to host Kibble & Bids. There is just no way we can adequately thank them for their generosity.

And 2004? We've evaluated what was really phenomenal at this year's Kibble & Bids and also discussed what could be improved for next year. Look for some of the same things in 2004 - and some changes. One thing we can tell you for certain, Kibble & Bids will be even better next year and will be worthy of your patronage and support! As soon as we have a firm date, we'll have our plans posted on Homeward Bound's website and in future newsletters.
