Homeward Bound’s primary focus in the past has been rescuing and placing dogs in Sacramento,
Sutter, Placer, El Dorado, and surrounding counties. However, we discovered over time that animal shelters are routinely euthanizing Goldens in other areas of the state. We decided we could not sit idly by while these dogs died unnecessarily. We have begun to reach out to other areas of the state to rescue Goldens in need. We have rescued dogs and done adoptions in the Central Valley, and as far south as San Diego, and as far north as Oregon, and many points in between. We have increased our activities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The logistics of these long-distance rescues has strained our resources. Because
most Homeward Bound volunteers have full-time jobs in addition to their rescue activities, it is often difficult for us to drive the distances required to rescue some of the dogs that need us. Often we are given very small windows of opportunity by the shelters to rescue a dog in jeopardy of euthanasia.
Thus was born the "Golden Taxi Team". We are reaching out for volunteers to serve on this transportation team. Team members would serve several critical functions for Homeward Bound:
This team is critically important as we expand our areas of influence. Often, team members will literally mean the difference between life and death for at-risk Goldens. If you can spare the time and wish to truly make a difference in a world that often discards animals like yesterday’s trash, please join our effort. Your help is desperately needed and will be greatly appreciated. Since we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, your mileage driven on our behalf, and certain other expenses, will be tax deductible.
Please contact Lea Kachler-Leake if you are interested in helping in this important effort, or if you have questions.
You will certainly find this to be a truly rewarding experience.
