Success Story

Our Precious Rose

Rose

We like to say we inherited Rose.

Rose came to Homeward Bound the day before Christmas in 2000. Her family was moving and didn't want to take her with them. She was a couple months shy of her 14th birthday. About this same time, Chet, a dear gentleman friend of ours who we had met through Homeward Bound, wanted to foster a golden-oldie, so Rose was taken to his home the day she arrived. This sweet man had also adopted a 10-year-old golden, Murphy, several months earlier, and the three of them hit it off immediately. It was obvious this girl had found her new home.

About a month later, Chet entered the hospital. Months earlier, he had asked if we would take care of his dogs if ever needed, and would Homeward Bound find them good homes if something ever happened to him. We assured him he could count on us and Homeward Bound. We brought Murphy and Rose to our house when Chet went into the hospital, and I know it was comforting for him to get regular updates on how his "babies" were doing. He took delight in sharing the pictures we brought him of Murphy and Rose with the nursing staff. Sadly, our dear friend passed away 4 weeks later. He was one week shy of his 84th birthday.

Within a couple of weeks, the Homeward Bound team found Murphy the perfect home. I know Chet would be pleased. Finding a home for 14-year-old Rose would take a little longer. It wasn't long before we decided we just couldn't let her go. Rose was happy with us, and frankly, I think we needed something to hold on to - something to remind us of our dear friend.

Some people inherit silver and fine china. We think we inherited something more precious than that......our beautiful Rose.
