Success Story

Mack

Mack

Now, a little about Mack. . .

Mack (Mackenzie) was found somewhere in Auburn, CA.  He had a terrible case of heartworm and he also had Lyme’s Disease.  Mack had been abused and seriously neglected.  The Homeward Bound Vet didn’t think Mack would live through the treatment.  After a lengthy stay in the Heartworm Hotel (the heartworm treatment center) Mack came to live with us in July 2002.  When he came into our home, he was emaciated and still very weak from treatment but soon thrived.  When Jim was activated by the Army in January, 2003, Mack was so desperately lonely for Jim that I had Homeward Bound search for a companion for him.  They found Sunny in December 2003 and she and Mack have been inseparable since.  Col. Jim wasn’t very excited to have a second dog but has come to love her and all her neurotic tendencies.  She was also severely abused.  You can’t let her see a broom and you can’t move too quickly or she runs and hides in a corner.  Jim laughingly tells the neighbors that he had to retire from the military because if he leaves again I’ll get another dog (he’s right).  Mack adores Jim to the point of obsession.  In the pictures where he is gazing, lovingly at something – it’s Jim.  It is very true what they say about a boy and his dog.

So, every year when we send out our Christmas cards and include a donation card for Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue, it is because we believe in rescue.  We want to let people know about the hundreds of goldens who are rescued each year and about the many more who need rescuing.  It’s such a wonderful organization – after all, they gave us Mack and Sunny.
