Success Story

Lady, formerly Piper

Lady

Dear Homeward Bound,

I’m helping my mom write my own success story. I was adopted on July 17, 2004. My name was Piper but mom, dad and other people noticed how dainty I am; therefore, they changed my name to Lady. I started answering to it right away and rarely leave my mom’s side.

For about 7 months before adopting me, my adoptive mom, dad and four-legged big brother went through grieving the loss of a Golden Retriever that was loved and waiting to find the right dog to fill the void. About 1 week after the loss of their loved one, mom heard about Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue. Mom said that working with them was an awesome experience that helped me get to know our neighbor Joyce. She’s the one who got my parents application, did the home visit and helped make the adoption possible.

Jody didn’t have me for more then a few hours at the ranch, but knew that I needed to be around a confident dog and that I’d be great with children. Her instincts were right. Within 2 weeks of being part of this family, mom brought me to the school she teaches at. She teaches students with moderate to severe disabilities. Mom let me play with her students, let them take me for short walks…. I also made everybody smile and laugh at their picnic.

During lunch, mom put my leash on a wheelchair handle. Without any prompting, I made myself at home. When my mom looks at this picture, she affectionately calls me her “Therapy Girl.” I think you can tell how happy I am by the smile on my face in this picture. Thanks Joyce and Jody. I’m a happy and lucky 11 month old little girl!
