All proceeds from both Fund of Love and our Double the Gold Challenge are dedicated 100% to providing medical treatments for the hundreds of dogs we rescue each year. Pictured here is a brave young girl named “Ginger.” She came to Homeward Bound at just eight months of age, and although playful and happily wagging her tail, was in pain with ears so badly infected and inflamed that she required a bilateral ear canal resection to alleviate her suffering. The good news is that Ginger came to us in time and we were able to help her quickly enough that she will be able to hear normally as she starts her new life. She will live a wonderful life with her new adoptive mom, free of pain and suffering. Supporters of Homeward Bound made it possible for this little girl to have the surgery she needed, along with spay surgery, vaccinations, and heart worm and flea preventative so that she is ready to go to her new forever home.
Homeward Bound spent $343,000.00 on medical and veterinary expenses last year, $20,000.00 more than in 2010. We rescued fewer dogs but spent more on medical expenses. Many of the 710 dogs we rescued last year came to us with untreated medical issues. Due to hard times, many dogs are going without early treatments that may resolve medical conditions simply and inexpensively. By the time they arrive at Homeward Bound, many simple issues have become very serious and costly.
The success of Fund of Love and our Double the Gold Challenge are of utmost importance, as together they provide a significant portion of our ever-increasing total medical expenses each year. Each dog we rescue deserves the best care and treatment we can give. A large number of the dogs we rescue require spay or neuter, all receive a battery of vaccinations, many get blood tests, and they all receive the surgeries or treatments they need, from the minor to the extraordinary.
