Frequently Asked Questions about Fostering
What are the responsibilities of a foster family?
The primary responsibility of a foster family is to love and care for the dog as if it were your own while it is your care. You will also be asked to make the dog available to prospective adopters. We also ask you to address any obvious training issues.

Who pays for medical care if my foster dog needs to go to the vet?
Homeward Bound will pay for the dog's medical care. We ask that you take the dog to one of our designated vets, and that you obtain prior approval from Homeward Bound, unless it's an emergency. In an emergency, take the dog to the vet and HBGRR will reimburse your expenses.

What do I do if an applicant wants to adopt my foster from my home?
Have the applicant fill out and sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption donation. Advise them the dog's vaccination records will be mailed to them in a week or so (give them a copy of the records if you have them). Mail the contract and the check to the sanctuary.

What if I decide I want to adopt my foster dog?
As a foster, you have first option of adopting your foster. Just notify HBGRR of your intent, fill out an adoption contract and pay the adoption donation.

Who provides the foster dog's food?
HBGRR asks that the foster provide the dog's food, if possible. However, if that is not possible, HBGRR will provide food.

What flea preventative/heartworm preventative do I use? How do I get it?
HBGRR provides Frontline, which prevents fleas, ticks, and heartworm. It should be applied monthly, at the beginning of the month. Notify us when you need some; we will arrange for you to get it. You can have Frontline mailed, or you can pick it up at the sanctuary.

What standard medical care does each dog receive?
Each dog coming to HBGRR receives a basic medical examination, heartworm test, and 3 vaccinations: DHLPP, rabies, and bordetella. In addition, the dog is spayed or neutered, if he/she is intact. With senior dogs (over 10) we usually do a full blood panel. We treat any medical condition that is identified.
Please make sure your own dog(s) is current on all vaccines including his/her bordetella vaccine prior to getting a Homeward Bound foster dog. This will help prevent kennel cough in case your foster dog has been exposed to it.

How do I become a foster?
Simply fill out an online adoption application and indicate your interest in fostering. A volunteer will contact you to schedule a home visit. When that is completed, the foster coordinator will contact you to discuss what type of dog might be best for your home. Then we will match you up with a wonderful foster golden.
