Emily's Foster Story
by Andrea Lewis and Jeff Fuller

This is a story about our first foster “child, Emily.  We were fortunate to have Emily as our foster not once, but twice.  She was found wandering the streets of Granite Bay and had no identification.  A good soul picked her up and took her to the Auburn pound.  She was unclaimed, and  Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue came to her aid one week later.  Our vet estimated her age at approximately seven years old.

We had never had a foster experience and weren’t certain how our two Goldens, Maxwell and Melissa, would react.  When Emily was introduced, we knew things would be fine!  She had a great temperament, was already housebroken, knew basic commands, and immediately fit into our dog-centered household.  It was clear she had been someone’s pet.  We fostered Emily for approximately one week and, during that time, she fit easily into our daily routine.

By the time we took Emily to Petco for a possible adoption, we had become very attached to her and even became somewhat possessive when prospective owners were evaluating her!   I knew she was up for adoption, but in my heart  I was willing to keep her.   Reason prevailed, and a young couple who had recently lost their Golden Retriever adopted Emily.   Unfortunately, this adoption did not work out for either Emily or her new family.  After a three-week trial, Jody Jones called  asking if we would foster Emily again until a suitable home was found.  Would we?  Of course!  Emily was a member of our family for several weeks until we interviewed prospective owners, a couple with a young son.  It was clear this would be a wonderful home for Emily.  Needless to say, our entire family went to bid Emily farewell and to see her in her new, permanent home.   As hard as it was to say good-bye, we had a wonderful feeling knowing that we had helped Emily on her journey to a new family.

We received a Christmas card and note from Emily’s new family, including a photograph of Emily with a stuffed toy in her mouth (naturally!).  Our foster experience was so positive with Emily that we will continue to foster homeless Goldens.   And, while we love all of the Goldens that pass through our foster home, we hold a special place in our heart for Emily. She is the epitome of why Homeward Bound exists to rescue, nurture and find loving, suitable homes for these beautiful dogs.
