Collar Strangulation

Is YOUR Dog in Danger of Collar Strangulation??

Does it surprise you to lean that dog collar strangulation claims thousands of dogs’ lives each year?.  Collars can easily become entangled in bushes, trees, caught on fences, decks, crates, door knobs, picnic tables, iron gates, and a host of other objects.  Collars can get caught on garage doors as they are opening.  ID tags can get caught between boards in back yard decks or in heating vents, trapping the dog, who then struggles and fights to get free, often with disastrous results.

Collar strangulation is a particular danger for multiple dog households, especially those with active players.  It’s easy for teeth and jaws to become caught in nylon, fabric, and leather collars as well, as well as chain collars.  A dog’s overriding instinct is to pull away when something is strangling it.  The dog can become panicky, twisting, turning, tightening the collar, with a likely result being suffocation.

Not wearing a collar presents another set of problems.  Some people prefer to leave their dogs’ collars off when they are at home, putting the collars on only when it’s time to go out.  Having your dog micro chipped is certainly a great way to help ensure his safe return if he gets lost.  But microchips require a chip reader to identify the dog, which usually means the dog must be taken to a vet or the shelter in order to be identified.  ID tags worn on the collar enable quick and easy identification.  So what do we do?

Keep Safe CollarWe may have a solution.  We found a couple different styles of safety collars on the market.  The one we like best is called the KeepSafe Break-Away collar.  Its specially designed latch is designed to break open under pressure.  It can be reattached and used over and over.  It can also be safely used to walk your dog on leash, because the safety mechanism is bypassed when a leash is attached.

For more information on the KeepSafe Break-Away collar, go to www.keepsafecollar.com.  You can also purchase the KeepSafe Break-Away collar from Homeward Bound by using the order form below. Proceeds from the sale of the collars benefit  Homeward Bound.

Whichever method you choose, please consider doing your dog a favor and remove his conventional collar and replace it with a safety collar, especially if you have multiple dogs or if your dog plays with other dogs or spends time outside unsupervised.  And please never leave your dog unsupervised wearing a chain collar.  Choke collars and pinch collars should be removed immediately after your walk or training session.Changing/removing collars means a bit more work for you...but it could save your dog’s life.
