My name is Bentley McCreary, but you can just call me “The Bentley”, I was a one time Sports Reporter for Homeward Bound and was instrumental in establishing the Harley Hipster Foundation. You can read some of my stuff in the “Helping Special Needs Goldens” section. I have come out of retirement because I always wanted to be a crime scene reporter and I’ve heard that Homeward Bound is fighting a serious crime. The crime is good dogs not being adopted! I decided to do some investigating and found that several really nice dogs are being overlooked, so in the next few weeks I will be doing in-depth interviews with these poor victims to determine why they have remained unadopted for so long. They call me a "grandpa dog" cause I shuffle around and bark out orders. You get to my age (12 years +) I think you have the right to shuffle and bark! I am very well behaved in the house and if I need to go out or have something to eat I'll let you know. I am a great babysitter and I get along with cats and other dogs. I am a pretty easy fella to have around except I got some arthritis in my back end and need help getting into the car. I had a bad skin irritation so now I need to take regular medicated baths but I like being clean so that's not an issue for me.

I'm back again! I tried that adoption thing and the people here think I need to be a bit more specific about my needs. I am a nine year old boy and a whole bunch of fun to have around. The problem I have, is this thing about toys…..I tend to eat them! I guess I am looking for an adult only home where my diet can be monitored and no foreign substances allowed. I am ok with other dogs as long as they don't have toys. I have yet to meet another dog who is happy about me eating their toys! I do have to take a couple different kind of pills each day but as long as you throw them in my with my food I'll eat them....I think I mentioned, I'll eat just about anything.

Boy did I ever blow it! I was placed with a wonderful lady who wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of our live together. We were out for a walk and I got mad because another dog was on my sidewalk. I took out after him to let him know it was MY sidewalk. That was bad enough but my lady fell down and decided that we really weren't a perfect match. I am a 9 year old jerk looking for a second chance. I can be placed as a Senior Touch dog but best with a homebody who doesn't care about taking the dog for a walk. I am a really good people friend, it's just those other dogs who get to me.

Hi, I am Danny, a loving 8 year old boy looking for my forever home. I am in a really great foster home learning about proper skin and fur care. I have really let myself go these past few years, poor nutrition, no brushing and just plain body neglect. My foster mom says that I am a complete gentleman and very easy to live with. I learned to use the dog door and am really enjoying the freedom of not having to ask to go outside. I am living with a small dog, a cat and a really cute kid. I know basic commands, I like riding in the car and am very good on a leash.

Tullie, Tillie . . . call me anything as long as you call me for dinner and hugs. I'm sad 'cause my owner died but I'm happy 'cause I ended up at Homeward Bound. Man, these people are the greatest. As you can tell from my picture .. .. I'm an 8 year old beauty. Modesty is not one of my virtues but my rich red coat, sweet and gentle golden temperament, happy-go-lucky outlook on life and cute smile are some of my best traits. I'm living in a foster home in Lafayette and it's fun 'cause they have two teenage kids and another dog so we're always busy. However, I can be really happy whether I'm busy or not. In other words, I'm an easy keeper and would be perfect for just about any household. I love walks (I'm good on the leash and on recall), rides in the car and being the center of attention. I have basic obedience training, know how to use the dog door, consider everyone a friend and am anxious to find that perfect forever home. Another dog is fine. I'm not sure about cats but I'm laid back so we'd probably become buds quickly. In a nutshell: I'd be the perfect addition to your life. An ample supply of endearing charm comes with no extra charge.

Hi! I'm George and I am here with my best friend, Buttercup. We are both 7 years old and be both could use a diet plan. Buttercup has been with me almost all of my life and I hope we can stay together; she wouldn't know what to do if she wasn't following me around. We are both housebroke, like to go for ride, good with kids and other dogs. We have never been around cats so we still need to take a "cat test" .....wonder if you get a grade or it's a pass\fail kind of thing???

Update:
Can you believe it! I gave that man the best years of my live and in our prime he decides that he needs "his space". Well, as far as I am concerned he can go all the way to outer space to find the room he needs!

Ok, I'm sorry but I just can't take that bossy lady one more day! If Jon and Kate can do it so can George and Buttercup! I am a SINGLE male around 7 years old and all I want to do is live my life without someone in my ear constantly telling me what I can and can't do! I like other dogs with the exception of bossy females, and would enjoy being the family dog. I am more than willing to take that cat test...they can't be any worse than what I've been living with!

I am an Angel looking for a new home. I am about 7 years old and am a people person. I want to be someone's special Angel and never again, have to look for a new home. I have some basic skills; I sit on command, come when called and am willing to jump through hoops to make people happy. I like other dogs and think cats are here for me to chase, so I guess a cat free home would be best for this Angel.

Update:
I decided that I would like to delete that "likes dogs" comment. I think I would be much happier as a one and only!

They call me the Duke, I am a 7 year old boy and I am in need of a new home. I am used to living in the house and I get along great with other dogs, I am even learning about cats. Don't let this get around but they are kind of cute, especially when they rub up against you. I have had some obedience training so I am good on everything but 'stay", that one takes a bit more patience than I have. Oh, because that time is coming up I should warn you, I am terrified of fireworks so I will not be celebrating the Fourth of July!

Since I have been here I have really been paying attention to my diet and I have lost that extra tummy roll. I like to go for rides in the car and am very good on a leash. They call me Sheldon and, if there is food involved, I answer right away! I used to have a home but now the bank has a home and I was sent to a shelter. I am about 5 years old and a self proclaimed major snuggle bum! Snuggling is by far my favorite activity. I don't like cats and haven't had a chance to make up my mind about other dogs. The people here are still doing that evaluation thing so I should have some more stuff for you next week.

I would make that family dog that all your neighbors envy and all your friends wish they had. I like other dogs but do have that age old cat problem......I think I have to "get the kitty". I figure that there is enough cat free households out there that it shouldn't hurt my chances for finding the perfect home and family...for the perfect dog!

I am a 2 and 1/2 year old girl. I have excellent house manners, am obedience trained and even know how to do some tricks. I love to go for runs and enjoy a good game of tug a war! The reason I am here is that I get very nervous around young children. I think my protecting instinct gets in the way of my good judgment. I have reference letters from my family telling how much they loved me and what a great dog I am .We just all think it would be best for me to live in a house without children. I am as loyal as a boy scout and as territorial and protective as a mama bear! .

Anybody want to go swimming? I am a 2 and 1/2 year old girl and I live to be in the water! My family had to move and couldn't take me with them so I came her to find a new family; one who likes water would be perfect! I lived with a lot of kids and that's fun because they liked to play in the water too. I am still being evaluated as to what else I like besides water so will let you know how that works out.

I am a 2 year old girl and I have been a loved family member all of my life. I am a very strong willed girl and don't always get along with other dogs. I haven't been around cats so don't know how they are about being told what to do by a dog. I like kids but would prefer them older, little kids make me a bit nervous. Hi! My name is Bilu, but I didn't think it was very feminine, so I have my foster Mom and Dad call me Lucy, and I love it! I am a small 1 ½ year old female, and very cute if I do say so myself! I came all the way from Taiwan just to find my forever home! I love people, and cats are OK, but the verdict isn't in yet on small children. I prefer to have my people all to myself, but I might consider sharing my home with one larger dog. I have excellent house manners, love my crate, and love to go for rides in the car. Daisy is a honey-colored lab mix, maybe has some golden retriever and shepherd in her. She came to the shelter after having had at least two homes. The shelter listed as eleven but her foster and vet think she is closer to nine. She moves well, jumps energetically, and loves to run joyfully in the yard. The vet gave her a clean bill of health, including a complete blood test which turned up nothing alarming, so she should have several good years ahead of her. She is a sweetheart with people, loves to cuddle and be near you and wants to please. She knows sit, down, stay, loves to shake hands, and can be left alone for extended periods. She is completely housebroken. She would be a great housedog. She walks reasonably well on leash but is strong. Now the bad news - she is fearful of dogs and the fear turns into snarling when they come within 3-4 feet. We are working on training but she clearly needs to be the queen in a palace with no dogs, cats or small animals. and with an experienced, patient and loving owner. She will repay you with love and loyalty. Though she is good with children we suggest a home without them because of her current behavior toward dogs. I am a 12 year old girl and am looking for a doggie diet farm. Actually what I would like is a spa environment where I could be pampered and polished as I lost these last few pesky pounds. Do get me wrong I am not a dumpy old lady….the old boys around here think I'm pretty hot! Normally I have lovely, long black hair but because these last few years I haven't been so well cared for the groomer decided to give me a shorter style but I really miss my long hair and am going to let it grow back.

I am good in the house, I know basic commands including fetch, I walk well on a leash, like to go for rides in the car. I have no interest in helping in the garden, I am content to just lay in the sun and enjoy the flowers. The only things that I don't like are cats and other dogs, outside of that I'm a ray of sunshine!

I am a 10 year old "Chow-der"! I have enough Golden Retriever in me to make me down right lovable and enough Chow in me to make me really cute. I was in a Shelter for quite awhile before I came to Homeward Bound. The Shelter said they hated to let me leave because I was such a valuable resource. You see, I was the official dog tester, I would let the people know if a dog was dog friendly or not. Not a bad gig but nothing compared to being in a home of my own. I am on the smaller side so I don't take up much room, I would like to find a home with retired people like me.

I am a 10 year old girl and always thought I was a Golden Retriever until they told me that Golden's don't come as small as me. Maybe I am a miniature Golden Retriever! I was a loved family dog until the night my owner didn't come home.The next day people came and told me that he would never be coming home and that I would have to find somewhere else to live. I had heard cars could be dangerous but I thought that was only for dogs. I am housebroken, good with other dogs and am fine with cats. I had to have some teeth pulled so I may still be talking funny but I will be fine and it's so nice not to have my teeth hurting.

My name is Princess and that's how I have always been treated. I lived with an elderly lady and when she died there was no one to take care of me. I am a 9 year old princess (girl) and I have short dark gold hair sort of like a Labrador Retriever. I was pretty scared when I first got here and kept to myself but now I am spending more time with the people and I think I am ready to take a chance on finding a new home. I'm not really sure what I want in a new family other than I still want to be the princess.

The Dog Doc says that I am about 8 years old and confirmed that I am a boy……wonder how long they have to go to school to be able to figure that one out! I have been on my own for awhile so I am used to entertaining myself , guess that would make me a "low maintenance" dog. Everybody here fights over who gets to take me for a walk because I am so good on a leash. I am still waiting for the evaluation thing, the people are so happy just walking around with me that they forget to ask me all those questions.

I know girls aren’t supposed to be as big as me and I am very tired of being told what a good looking BOY I am! I am 7 years old and as I said very much a girl! I tend to be protective of those I love and so I am best suited as an only dog. I am kind of neutral on that whole cat thing guess it would depend on the cat if I like it or not. But then with all of me, who would have room for anyone else! I like kids, like to go for walks, playing in the water, love to ride in the car and think treats were invented just for me. I am very interested in the greater outdoors and think chasing the birds is a whole bunch of fun! If you are looking for that loving, loyal life partner..........I'm your girl.

The people say that I need a family who will fix me up with a weight loss program and a personal fitness trainer….Ok, the trainer was my idea, just thought if I had to be on a diet it would be fun to have someone to work out with.

Update:
Thought I had better check in and let you know how the weight loss program is going....69 pounds and looking really good! I am able to play longer and feel wonderful. I am going to be at the Adoption Center next week end and I am hoping to meet some families. I bet my old friends won't even recognize me!

I am housebroke and am obedience trained I just have this problem thinking I am supposed to be in charge. I am a 6 year old girl and thought to be a Flat Coat Retriever. First off, I want it understood that I am innocent of all and any charges. My owner was taken to jail and just because I happened to be living with him I was presumed guilty and also taken to jail. Homeward Bound paid my bail and promised the authorities that I would not be a threat to the general public. Oh, what an ordeal! I like to ride in cars (properly registered cars) and go for walks (but not to case the neighborhood) I like children (but would never ask for a ransom). I am looking for a respectable, law abiding family to spend the rest of my life with.

Ok, I am ready to go on the list….I just got to remember to breathe! I am a 5 year old boy and when I first got here I was so scared that I scared the people. I hated being in that small room aka kennel but then I started going out for walks everyday and my world got a whole lot better. When I was first rescued from a life on the streets the nice people gave me the name Stella and I always wondered who they were talking about. Then I went to a foster home where my foster mom discovered that my name is really Sadie! I am a 4 year old girl and ready for my furever home! My foster mom says that I am very well behaved and am great in the house and the yard; I believe gardening should be left to those with thumbs! I am a big girl and I love to play so maybe my kids should be big enough that I don't knock them over. I love other dogs and enjoy being with them. I do like to chase cats and birds so best if my new home doesn't include either of them. I like toys to play with and love to chase balls....wait till you here the story of me learning to play croquet!

Update:
I went down at the Sanctuary last week to meet families but not too many families came out to meet dogs. So I went back home with my foster mom and on the way we had an adventure! Mom stopped to get some strawberries and because it was so hot she left me in the car with the air conditioner running. I was standing up on the door trying to see what she was buying when I accidentally stepped on the door lock! Boy was mom surprised when she tried to open the door. I didn't know what to do, I wanted mom back in the car with me but I couldn't figure out how to get the lock to go the other way...I kept stepping on buttons thinking I could fix it and then all of a sudden the window went down! Mom quickly unlocked the door before I pushed anymore buttons and she wasn't even mad at me! Although every time she looks at me she starts laughing....

I once was lost…….and I still am! I am a 3 year old boy in need of a family. A very nice person took me in and tried to find my home but never could. They brought me here to Homeward Bound because I am a Golden\something cute. They told me when I got here that I would have to be "fixed"….I figured out what that meant but when I woke up I was surprised that they also "fixed" my eye! My eyelashes used to rub my eye and it was so painful, now I can look up and all over! The family who first took me in had kids and I really miss them so I hope my new family has lots of kids.

I am a 3 year old boy looking to for a lifelong companion. They say I have separation anxiety but the truth is I just don't like to be left alone. I like other dogs and am fine staying home with them. So my ideal home would have people around a lot and maybe other dogs. Oh, you know what else would be really great? A dog door! I wouldn't have to worry so much about being left outside. Right now I have someone go outside with me but that gets kind of old and I can't always find someone willing to go with me, especially when it's raining. I have lots of youthful energy so it would be fun to have someone to go for walks with. I have excellent house manners and really do enjoy being inside.

Update:
There they go, taking my picture again! I was working out on the treadmill, then I took a walk around the neighborhood and just about the time I settled in for a nap...out they come with the camera...gotta love foster parents!

I am a 3 year old Golden\Chow boy. I have very soft blonde hair and am on the smaller side. I came in as a fixer upper and am now out of pain and all fixed up! They just told me I could start interviewing families so I need to give some more thought on what my perfect home would look like. I will get back to you next week with all of my likes......and any dislikes if I have any!

Update:
Looks like I am going to be in need of a seeing eye person. I have developed cataracts on my eyes and the Doc says that I am not a surgical candidate. Just about the time I was really feeling good I get this news......so much for "a dogs life".

If my name wasn't Truman it would be Velcro! I am a small, 3 year old boy looking for someone to love me. I am very affectionate and love to cuddle. I do tend to prefer the ladies, they seem to like to cuddle more than the guys. I went to school and learned basic commands and how to walk on a leash. I am nervous around really young kids so the people think I would be happiest with older kids. I am not in to playing with toys, I prefer hanging out with people and doing what they like to do. I am very social and happy by nature....my tail likes to wag!

They call me Balou and say that I am a very needy dog. I am about 3 years old and yes, very needy! I need someone I can trust, I need someone to love me, I need someone to feed me and most important, I need someone to keep me safe and never let me get lost again. What I don't need is another dog to share the love with. When I have someone paying attention to me the last thing I want is another dog thinking we should share. I am still being evaluated but so far the people here really like me; I think that's because I like to snuggle with everyone!

Jake was born in August, 2006. He has a beautiful smile and a great personality. As a golden/lab mix, he has the great instinctive qualities of a golden retriever and the mass of a large 90+ pound lab. At the park, kids have swarmed Jake to pet him. He basks under that kind of attention. Jake enjoys any type of interaction where he is mentally challenged. For example, if I bounce a tennis ball in front of Jake so that he could not get it, within the third bounce, he learned to stick both of his paws out to stop the ball in midair. Jake is able to communicate well with his human companions through low grunts, wagging his tail rapidly, and looking at you while turning his body. Each of these gestures has specific meanings for Jake. Jake particularly enjoys learning new words. Jake smiles and pants with happiness when he learns a new word. He is very protective of his human and dog companions. Often, he has fallen asleep lying at my feet or with his head on my lap. He is very obedient. Once you have established a relationship with Jake, you don't have to ask him twice when you wish him to respond. Jake is a very happy dog

I am ready to try this adoption thing again! I am about 18 months old now and have been going to school learning how to be a good boy. I have learned sit, down and stay! I am also learning how to play well with others. I will still do best with an experience dog owner who will continue my education but, dang, it's time for me to go home!

I am a 1 year old Black Lab\Golden boy and along with a new family I am looking for a Lawyer willing to champion a dogs right of way! Wouldn't you think if a car and a dog where going for the same spot on the road the dog would have a natural right of way......well, not the road hogging car that ran me down. I ended up with a broken leg and needed to have surgery but I am feeling much better now and would like very much to go home and be taken care of. Oh, and that car.....it's going to need more that a little surgery!

I am an 11 month old boy and I love to run and play. I am a very friendly kind of guy and love to play with people. I haven't been around any other dogs and right now I think that's just fine. I don't particularly care for cats either. I thought I must be a person trapped in a dog suit, then I found out that most people like dogs and cats. Guess I am just one of a kind and need an understanding person to run and play with me. I have had some training and maybe with some more training I could figure out who I really am and why I don't want to play with my own kind.

The goal of Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue is to rescue Golden Retrievers. The exception is Golden/Lab mixes and Flatcoats in need. Occasionally dogs not meeting this criteria find their way in, and rather than toss them back out, we have we have decided to give them their own page to tell their stories. Each dog has a "Rescue Buddy" to promote them and act as a contact for that dog.

I am Midge, 12 year old mother of 9 year old daughter, Lucy. I am a Golden\Lab and Lucy is me plus a really sweet, vertically challenge father. Both of us were loved family members until the people had to move and couldn't take us with them. We are both very loving and well behaved. I know it's a lot to ask to take both of us but Lucy doesn't take up much room!

I am only 7 years old but I might as well be a hundred years old, I can't remember the last time I laughed and I think I have forgotten how to have fun. I was living on the streets and a nice woman picked me up and took me home, she tried really hard to take care of me but I was one of so many that she just couldn't do it. When she died I was sent to Homeward Bound hoping to find my forever home. It's really nice here, I have a comfortable bed and as much food as I can eat but it's still not the same as being home. Because I have had such a shattered life the people here say that I can be a Senior Touch dog and maybe a nice retire couple could show me how to laugh again

Well, it's just me now and I am still a 5 year old boy. I am down here because I am a more of a Labrador Retriever than I am Golden. My brother Max was adopted and I got to go to a foster home. Boy has my life changed! I get to be in the house and I can't even begin to tell you what an experience that has been. I used to hear the other dogs talking about missing watching TV and I had no idea what they were talking about. Now I get it and agree it is so cool to lay around with the family watching the small people moving around that box! I am very curious by nature so TV is right up my alley along with bird watching and catching flies. My foster mom says that not only am I a lover but also very well mannered in the house and she is determined to have me 'healing" by the time I'm adopted. Let me tell you, it just doesn't get much better than this.......livin the dream, a dog's dream!

Update:
Man, I thought I was busted for sure! My foster mom has been telling everyone how smart I am and that I knew I wasn't allowed on the furniture without ever being told. The other night Mom was getting ready for bed and it seemed to be taking longer than usual so I figured I could take a quick snooze on the COUCH......boy what a stupid thought that was...mom came looking for me and scared the dickens out of me! Now, for sure, I know not to get up on the couch. I guess I wasn't too bad, cause I still got my nightly massage.

Yup, that's me looking like I am running around on my back to legs! The truth is the camera just caught me at the start of a giant leap. I love to run and play, sometime I think I could even fly! I am young, 18 months, and love having lots of room to test out my flying skills. I am on the smaller side which should make me more aerodynamic. One of the things we found out that I don't like is cats....just can't figure out a good reason to have one.

I am a 4 month old and not much of a Golden Retriever, more like a Lab\Sheppard mix. I came in with my two sisters and we were all so scared that the Shelter said we weren't adoptable. Good thing Homeward Bound said we could come here! We all went to different foster homes and have all learned so much. The thing I learned was that cats can be fun! I have one in my foster home and it plays with me! I don't have a picture of just me, just a family portrait....that's me in the middle.

They used to call me "scary Carrie" but not anymore! I get scared once in awhile but am learning that people are really nice and that being a housedog is about the best thing that could happen to a 4 month old little girl! I get to sleep right next to the people bed and I feel safe all night. I am also learning that playing with other dogs is a lot of fun even more fun than I used to have playing with my sisters!
