Dog Levels
In an effort to ensure that each Homeward Bound adoption is successful for the adopter and the dog, each dog is evaluated by our volunteers and assigned a rating, based upon his or her energy level, personality traits and observed behavior. Homeward Bound endeavors to provide dog descriptions that are as accurate as possible in order to match dogs with adopters with the appropriate experience level. Dog descriptions are based on observations from the time a dog was rescued. Homeward Bound often has limited or no background or history on a dog and therefore cannot guarantee any dog's future behavior.
Level 1
The Level 1 dog is a fireplace dog or couch potato that is super easy, has a low energy level, and has no issues. You will find that this level of dog would do well in virtually any home regardless of owner experience.
Level 2
Low to moderate energy, or in some cases high energy. Needs average leadership; generally lacks obedience and/or house manners, but is a nice dog. Dog may be shy and quiet, or may be outgoing, but this is not a difficult dog. This level may have minor issues that are easy to address.
Level 3
Moderate, high or very high energy/drive. This dog needs an experienced owner familiar with how to provide direct leadership and proper management. Level 3 dogs typically have a challenging behavior, but are good dogs. These dogs might be dog reactive or dog aggressive, may have to be an only animal in the home, the dog needs daily physical and mental stimulation, etc. This level of dog is not an average pet.
Level 4
This is a dog that has an intense focus to work or extreme energy/drive. It could be a dog that provides search and rescue services, could be a competitive Flyball or Agility dog, or has other sporting breed abilities. These dogs can be strong, pushy and/or dominant. They need an extremely experienced owner that has the commitment to provide the dog with the guidance and training he/she needs to be successful.

BJ
Hi there! I am back and looking for a second chance. I am still a nine year old boy but we have found out a few things about my likes and dislikes. I like dogs my size but think that small dogs are too easily confused with cats....and I don't like cats! What I do like is food, toys, balls and lots of attention! I love to be brushed, petted, and talked to. I like to play fetch but have a really hard time bringing the ball back....I worked too hard to get it! I am trying to work on my jumping up problem but it still gets me in trouble when I knock down small children.

JASMINE
I am an eight year old girl and I am living in a foster home in Redding. I just finished up the very best in medical care…we found out that I have a thyroid issue but it's under control with just a small pill. My ears are all cleaned up now so I am healthy and ready to go home! I still need to lose some weight but the dog doc says the thyroid pills will help with that plus the really good meals I am eating now. I like older kids but don't have a lot of "toddler tolerance" so my ideal family would be older and into lots of affection! I am great on a leash, know my basic command, good in the house, and very easy going.

RANGER
Finally! I just finished up heartworm treatment and am ready to go home! I am a seven year old boy and let me tell you I am so happy to be over that treatment. It is really hard on us guys, we have to stay in a small space, no running, no playing and you feel just horrible. I get along great with other dogs, cats and LOVE kids. I really hope my new family has kids because I just light up when I see them. I should warn you that I have been trying really hard to learn how to talk but it comes out kinda growly....I would never hurt anyone and you will know by my smiley face and waggy tail that I just have something I want to tell you! I am afraid of thunder storms so will need someone to hold me when the thunder booms.
Update: I was adopted for a short time until the people got tired of me taking all the food. I think in my former life I went with out food because now that I am feeling so good, food is all I think about! Even if I just had a meal I still think I am hunger and start clearing the kitchen counters! I need a patient family to help me get over this food fetish and who won't mind locking up the food until I am cured!

COLBY
I was adopted but it's just not working out so we are going to try to find me a more suitable family. I am a six year old boy and I love my new family as much as they love me but we just have different lifestyles. They are gone a lot and I need more people time. I get very bored when I have to stay home by myself all day, so bored that I start chewing on my arm. I don't do that when I am with someone or not alone for long periods of time. I wish I could say that I would enjoy another dog's company but that's just not the case...I prefer the company of people. I am great in the house, love to go for rides, walks, hikes anything the people like to do....I even like work, so I could go with you or keep you company when you work at home. I also am not fond of cats and very small children make me nervous.

THOMASINA & PRINCESS
My name is Thomasina but you can call me Tomi for short. I am a six year old girl and I am here with my sister Princess….also a six year old girl! Princess is sort of the boss and decides what we should do but she said I could tell you our story. We have been together all of our lives and want to be able to spend the rest of our lives together. You could think of us as a ready-made family and while you have to go to work we could take care of the house and keep each other company. We are both very affectionate and enjoy just hanging out. We like to go for rides in the car and just love kids! Neither one of us is high energy or obsessed with balls and toys; we prefer more of a mellow lifestyle.

KENDALL
I am a one year old boy and I can leap so high up in the air that It feels like I am flying! The people tell me it's OK to "fly" in the yard but I have to learn not to "fly" at the people. I LOVE toys and this place has so many that it's hard to pick a favorite...wait, it's the long, squeaky toy that's my favorite! I have very little in the way of obedience training and I am just pathetic on a leash. BUT, I am so willing to learn and I am motivated by food, balls, and TOYS! I will do anything you want as long as I get to eat, chase the ball, and play with toys! I love people and enjoy hanging out with other dogs....have to get back to you on the cat thing.

BLACK JACK
You know those days when everything you try to do goes wrong? Well that's what happened to me when my family decided to drop me off at Homeward Bound (in the middle of the night). They got the wrong place! It took a couple of days for the nice neighbors to realize that I got dumped at the wrong place! I am about ten years old and they refer to me as a "Labby boy". I am in serious need of a rescue-minded family because up till now I haven't had very good care. I am tall and lanky (another word for too thin) and am in need of some good skin/hair care. I am not good with cats.
Update: While I am waiting for my new family to find me I have been working on my leash skills and the people have been working on my diet and grooming. The results are that I am MUCH better on a leash and my skin and hair coat look great! I still have a ton of energy so will need an active family but I am also very affectionate and really a very nice dog!
Hey! Check out my new pictures by clicking on my photo--you can see for yourself how far I have come!

SUNNY
I am the best of both worlds! I have the beautiful dark red gold hair coat of a Golden Retriever and the, much easier to take care of, short hair of the Labrador Retriever! The people say that I am a very nice eight year old boy. I am well mannered and know how to walk on a leash. I like to play and am willing to follow the ball around but that's not my whole world. I really enjoy being with people and miss having a family of my own. I don't need a real active family it's more important to me that my family just wants to spend time with me. I am very easy going and fun to be with.
Update: Ok, I know this won't help my chances of getting adopted but you need to know that I HATE riding in the car! I don't do anything bad...I just complain the whole time. The joke around here is that hopefully I will be adopted by someone within walking distance and I will meet them there!

DENALI
The other dogs call me a "fraidy cat" cause lots of things scared me when I first got here. Even the leash scared me half to death until I learned that it meant I got to go somewhere with people! I am a five year old boy and I would like a quiet home where someone is around a lot. I just don't like being by myself when I could be hanging out with the people. I like other dogs but confess that I am a cat chaser and would not do well in a home with them. I have lived with kids and like them a lot. I also like to play with toys, play in the water, and go for car rides. I have settled in and not so much afraid anymore although I still don't like loud noises or thunder storms. I have found out that having your hair brushed is a very nice thing so I get excited when I see the hair brush!

RIVER
They call me River and that's fine with me, it's a cool name! I am about two years old and part of me is Golden the other part is either Shepard or Husky but in my heart I know that I am a true Golden boy! I am also very much a ladies man and not always comfortable around the guys. Some bad things happen to us street guys and it takes just a little time to get over it. I am learning to walk on the leash and I always come when I'm called. I also know how to sit when told to and I love lots of attention.....being brushed and scratched is this guys idea of heaven! I like other dogs but haven't had my cat test yet. I keep my kennel clean and enjoy going for car rides. The people here say that I have the most beautiful eyes and when I run in the yard I leap in the air just like a deer!

DEWEY
Puppy Power! That was my motto but I am beginning to think that I need to re-think that motto. I have been here a couple of months now and people say that I am cute but way too much puppy. I am a seven month old boy with short black hair and I love to play! The people think I might do better in a home with another dog. That way I would have someone to play with and also someone to teach me the ways of a dog. I am very happy being a puppy but one day my puppy behavior is going to be not so cute. So I guess it's time to grow up and act like a man-dog. I will also need a family who knows how to train and mold this man-dog that I need to start acting like cause I am pretty much a blank slate! A very active family would be great....cause I do love to romp and play!

Fool's Gold
The goal of Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue is to rescue Golden Retrievers. The exception is Golden/Lab mixes and Flatcoats in need. Occasionally dogs not meeting this criteria find their way in, and, rather than toss them back out, we have decided to give them their own section to tell their stories. |

CHLOE
I am a three year old girl and the most important thing in the world to me is to be able to run. I love to run and my ideal home would be where I had room to roam. The other thing you need to know about me is that I am not one of those warm and fuzzy kind of dogs who needs to be held and petted....YUK! It's not that I don't like people I just don't care to be cuddled. I will walk with you, come when you call me and I would probably even run with you--if you could keep up--but save your kisses. I prefer treats and praise. I am very focused and enjoy learning new things but am also independent. I would prefer not to live with another dog. The right person will find me to be a loyal, obedient, and quiet companion.
Update: I got to go to a foster home for a short time and discovered two very important things. First off, I am very gentle with small childern, and second...I am a missile when it comes to chasing cats! Hence the short stay in the foster home, Although my foster mom said that she really liked me and I liked her enough that I put my head in her lap on the way back to Homeward Bound.

JEREMY
Looks like one more time I have worn out my welcome and again find myself looking for a new home. I really like the foster home I have been living in because I have other dogs to play with and squirrels to chase! I am three years old now and still clueless as to my parentage. Homeward Bound thought I might be a "Doodle" when I first came in but then I started growing! I am now about 100 lbs and nearly 30" at my shoulders! People say that I am just stunning but because no one can figure out what it is I am having a DNA test done....sure hope it doesn't tie me to some crime...like snatching food off a counter! The problem I am having is with my mouth. I don't like to think that I bite but I use my mouth way more than I should and now I have taken to chasing kids and knocking them down. So I am in need of a really dog savvy owner willing to commit a ton of time to training. I love to be with people and go for long walks so my foster mom thinks I would be a great hiking companion. I am not a bad boy, just scared because I keep screwing up and it always costs me my home.

BENTLEY
How did a Border Collie mix end up at Homeward Bound? Simple . . . someone thought I was a Flat-coated retriever mix. You would think that they'd know the difference! Duh! But I'm not complaining, considering the alternative! I was brought to a vet hospital in Los Banos with a broken leg, likely the result of an encounter with a moving vehicle. Staff at the vet hospital liked me so much they went in search of a rescue that would take me in when no one claimed me. Homeward Bound arranged for surgery in Modesto then a foster home in Redding. After nearly 2 months in confinement, the pin in my leg has been removed and I'm ready to make my debut. While in foster care I have learned some basic commands (sit, wait, leave it, and of course, NO!), housetraining, and crate training. I get along well with my golden foster sisters, and I walk pretty well on a leash. What I don't do is come when called (I can be a bit willful), so my foster mom has enrolled me in a "recall intensive" training class.
I need a VERY SECURE yard with a 6 foot fence and would do best with an active family who can help me expend some of my energy; agility and flyball would be great activities for me! I love to play ball and am even learning to bring it back . . . my foster mom says if I'm going to "walk like a duck, I need to act like a duck," whatever the heck that means! Oh, and I do have a very high prey drive, so other critters, except dogs, are probably a not a good idea. Best guess on my age is 12 to 18 months. I'm still very puppy-ish and haven't entirely outgrown the need to chew on things, like bedding. I'm still a "work in progress," but I'm also a very smart and loving boy, and I really, REALLY like to cuddle! I'm looking for a special person or family who has the time and desire to continue my training and enhance my socialization skills. If you can overlook the fact that I'm not a Golden and instead, look to my loving personality, brains, and athletic prowess, I just might be the guy for you!

DUDLEY
Hi, my name is Dudley! I'm a much-loved 8 year-old male who loves to walk, play, swim, and get belly rubs. I've lived with the same loving family since I was a puppy, where I was the center of attention until two years ago when they had twin boys. I love the kids but have general anxiety that makes me nervous when I'm around them and separation anxiety that makes me want to be with them when I'm not (confusing, I know). I am looking for a new family (no kids, please) that is dog-savvy and willing to work with me to calm my anxiety and give me the exercise and attention that I crave. I tried living with a new family for a short period of time but it didn't work out so I'm trying again and confident I will succeed in a new environment since I've been working really hard to control my anxiety. I have some good dog friends that are calming influences but especially love to hang out with people. I'm incredibly loving, will thrive in the right environment, and come with excellent references.
