Senior Touch - A Senior-to-Senior Connection

lilaHave you considered having a dog in your home? Dogs make wonderful companions. Maybe Homeward Bound can assist you in acquiring a new companion.

Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to the rescue and placement of abandoned and homeless Golden Retrievers. If you are not familiar with Goldens, their sole purpose in life is to love and be loved. Goldens are a large but gentle breed, often weighing in at 50-85 pounds, with a life expectancy of 14-16 years.

Golden Retrievers come in a variety of sizes and colors, all with that innate desire to please their caregivers. Unfortunately, a lot of people want a puppy or young dog, and many of our Goldens needing homes are older (ages 11 and up) – we call them our "Golden Oldies." These dogs just want a warm, loving home to spend their senior years.

Homeward Bound established the "Senior Touch: A Senior-to-Senior Connection" program to match our "Golden Oldies" with retired persons and couples who are at least 60 years of age, not working, and on a limited income. We believe that a retired person can devote more time to these dogs -- walking, brushing, petting, and loving them.

If you are interested in adopting a "Golden Oldie", Homeward Bound will help you select the best dog for you. You will have a chance to foster the dog for a week or so to make certain the match is a good one. If the match does not suit your lifestyle, we will help you select another dog, if you desire. You will be matched with a Homeward Bound volunteer who will be available to answer your questions, facilitate visits to the vet, and be a new friend to help you become a great Golden caregiver. There is no adoption fee for this program.

We realize that many retired persons are on fixed incomes that may make it financially difficult to care for an older dog. Homeward Bound will provide life-long medical care including needed medications and vaccinations. All we ask of you is to ensure they receive quality food, their flea control and monthly heart worm medicine, an indoor sleeping area – and lots of love and tennis balls.

If you are interested in our Senior Touch program, please give us a call at (916) 655-1410. This is an all-volunteer program, so it may take a day or so for one of us to return your call. Don’t get discouraged – we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you for considering our Senior Touch program. We look forward to working with you.
